Abstract

Through a sociotechnical history of British Petroleum in Iran from 1901 to 1954, Katayoun Shafiee reveals how the transnational oil corporation resorted to administrative practices and social technologies to convert the egalitarian political claims made by oilfield workers into technoscientific calculations. In the process, the company formed a network of allies, from other oil majors to Western governments, shaping the Middle East’s politics and the world’s energy regime in the process.
